Most people imagine that the Gobi is only sand dunes but the Gobi zone covers around 30% of Mongolian territory and sand dunes only cover about 3% of that.The Gobi is a sparsely populated place but it is a home to two-humped Bactrian camels, antelope, white and black tailed gazelle, the Khulan wild ass, the Takhi wild horse, wild Argali mountain sheep, Ibex, Saiga antelope and the world’s only Mazaalai Gobi bear. The Gobi Desert was once an ancient inland sea bottom and nowadays it is a world of complex wonderful natural creations. “Southern and Middle Gobi” over-land tour takes you from Ulaanbaatar to the most popular sights in the Gobi. Visit a local nomadic family and learn about Mongolia’s nomadic way of the life, visit the gorgeous canyon of Yoliin Am, the 180 km long massive sand dunes of Khongor, the world famous Dinosaur Lands’ Flaming Cliffs or Bayanzag, the incredible ancient sea bottom of the White Stupas, the spectacular granite park, Baga Gazriin Chuluu and a hospitable camel breeder’s family to experiencing their nomadic way of the life. Day1. Ulaanbaatar - Baga Gazariin Chuluu Protected Area.
Today we will drive south to the beautiful Baga Gazariin Chuluu local protected area. Visit the some spots in Baga Gazariin Chuluu: a temple ruin used by Buddhist monks, a hole with Holy Water for the eyes and a small cave. Walk over pretty rocky granite hills to admire the natural beauty. Overnight in a tent in middle of beautiful rocky granite hills. (Tent/ B, L, D)
Day 2 and 3. Local Nomadic Family.
We will visit nomadic family, learn about the basic nomadic way of the life. Feel free to ask any questions about their way of life. Stay overnight with family in a traditional Mongolian dwelling, the ger. ( Ger/ B, L, D)
In the next morning have a traditional Mongolian breakfast of milk tea, fried biscuits, yogurt, cheese, curds and butter. Then make dairy products such as milk products and cook a traditional Mongolian meal of noodle soup and khorkhog. Do other daily activities. Play traditional Mongolian games and help the family and experience their daily work such as milking goats and mare horse and feed the baby animals .You can drink Fermented Mare's Milk “Airag”. Herd their livestock to pasture or collect and herd them back home. You can also help collect dried cow dung from the pasture area to be used as fuel. Do or help with any of these activities you choose. Stay overnight with family in a traditional Mongolian dwelling, the ger. (Ger/ B, L, D)
Day 4. Bayanzag “Flaming Cliffs” Ancient Dinosaur Land.
Drive to Bayanzag “Flaming cliffs”. This place is famous for its dinosaur fossils, eggs and the special Gobi tree, the “saxaul”. In 1922 American explorer Roy Chapmen Andrews and his expedition members found the first dinosaur eggs as well as numerous fossil skeletons of dinosaurs that lived 70-80 million years ago. Visit the Flaming Cliffs. Walk in the Gobi “saxaul” forest and enjoy its natural beauty. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 5. “Khongor” Sand Dunes.
In the morning we will drive to the southwest to Khongor Sand Dunes. We will visit and enjoy the hospitality of a camel breeder’s family, learn about Mongolia’s traditional nomadic way of the life. Khongor is one of the largest sand dunes in Mongolia. Its height reaches to 300 meters and extends from the northwest to the southeast over 180 km. The place is famous for its magnificent sand dunes, “Singing Dune”, the highest, Green Oasis and beautiful sunsets. Drive to the highest sand dune. Climb the Singing Dune and enjoy the ultimate amazing view of the Gobi sand dunes and the Green Oasis from the top of the dune. Enjoy the beautiful Gobi orange sun set in the evening. In the next morning enjoy camel riding. Visit the Green Oasis and “Cool Spring” by camel. Enjoy taking pictures and admire the Gobi beauty still at “Khongor” Sand Dunes.
Day 6. “Yoliin Am” Strictly Protected Area - Bearded Eagle Canyon.
After lunch we will drive east to “Yoliin Am” Strictly Protected Area “Bearded Eagle Canyon”. Yoliin Am is a strictly protected area since 1965 and it is located in the Gobi Three Beauties National Park. Yoliin Am is famous for its high & narrow canyons, frozen summer stream and wild life such as bearded eagles, wild Argali sheep, ibex, and snow leopard. The stream remains frozen even in July, the hottest month of the year. Visit a natural museum of the Gobi Three Beauties National Park and enjoy the picturesque Bearded Eagle Canyon, its wildlife and frozen summer stream. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 7. Tsagaan Suvarga “White Stupas” natural wonder.
Today we will drive to one of Mongolia’s great natural beauties, Tsagaan Suvarga “White Stupas”. These colorful cliffs were part of an ancient sea bottom millions of years ago. Nowadays it is a natural wonder with fantastic color combinations. Walk through Tsagaan Suvarga and enjoy the fantastic views. Good spot to get picture of sun set, sun rise and night stars with these colorful cliffs. (Tents/ B, L, D)
Day 8. Back to Ulaanbaatar city.
Today we will drive back to Ulaanbaatar city via Dundgobi province. When we arrive in Ulaanbaatar city you can visit shopping at a cashmere factory outlet store if you want. (B, L)
