Gobi & Central Mongolian tour – 17 days

Let’s travel across the Gobi Desert and the secluded land of central Mongolia. A trip to the Gobi Desert offers you a real adventure into the magnificent landscape of the mysterious rocky hills, colorful sandy cliffs, exquisite sand dunes and endless vast steppes. In the Gobi you will have opportunities to ride two-humped camel, visit a nomadic family, see the orange sunset,climb the highest sand dune.
Then a trip to Central Mongolia brings you to crystal clear freshwater lakes, a hot spring, flower-covered valleys, spectacular forested mountains, famous cultural and historical sights, and beautiful protected areas with abundant wildlife. In the Central Mongolian region you will have opportunities to relax in colorful natural beauty, walk to the best overlook spots, experience Mongolia’s cultural heritages,enjoy visiting interesting museums and temples. These adventures and more are included in this tour. 

Day1. Ulaanbaatar - Baga Gazariin Chuluu Protected Area.
Today we will drive south to the beautiful Baga Gazariin Chuluu local protected area. Visit the some spots in Baga Gazariin Chuluu: a temple ruin used by Buddhist monks, a hole with Holy Water for the eyes and a small cave. Walk over pretty rocky granite hills to admire the natural beauty. Overnight in a tent in middle of beautiful rocky granite hills. (Tents/ B, L, D)
Day 2. Local Nomadic Family.
We will visit nomadic family, learn about the basic nomadic way of the life. Feel free to ask any questions about their way of life. Do other daily activities and help the family and experience their daily work such as milking goats and mare horse and feed the baby animals. Herd their livestock to pasture or collect and herd them back home. Play traditional Mongolian games. Stay overnight with family in a traditional Mongolian dwelling the ger. ( Ger/B, L, D)
Day 3. Tsagaan Suvarga “White Stupas” - Yoliin Am “Bearded Eagle Canyon”
Today we will drive south to the Yoliin Am Strictly Protected Area “Bearded Eagle Canyon”. On the way we will visit to one of Mongolia’s great natural beauties, Tsagaan Suvarga “White Stupas”. These colorful cliffs were part of an ancient sea bottom millions of years ago. Nowadays it is a natural wonder with fantastic color combinations. Walk through White Stupas and enjoy the fantastic views.
Continue driving to the Yoliin Am. Yoliin Am “Bearded Eagle Canyon” is a strictly protected area since 1965 and it is located in the Gobi Three Beauties National Park. Yoliin Am is famous for its high & narrow canyons, frozen summer stream and wild life such as bearded eagles, wild Argali sheep, ibex, and snow leopard. The stream remains frozen even in July, the hottest month of the year. Visit a natural museum of the Gobi Three Beauties National Park and enjoy the picturesque Bearded Eagle Canyon, its wildlife and frozen summer stream. (Tents/ B, L, D)
Day 4. Bayanzag “Flaming Cliffs” Ancient Dinosaur Land.
After lunch drive to Bayanzag “Flaming cliffs”. This place is famous for its dinosaur fossils, eggs and the special Gobi tree, the “saxaul”. In 1922 American explorer Roy Chapmen Andrews and his expedition members found the first dinosaur eggs as well as numerous fossil skeletons of dinosaurs that lived 70-80 million years ago. Visit the Flaming Cliffs. Walk in the Gobi “saxaul” forest and enjoy its natural beauty. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 5. “Khongor” Sand Dunes.
In the morning we will drive to the southwest to Khongor Sand Dunes. We will visit and enjoy the hospitality of a camel breeder’s family, learn about Mongolia’s traditional nomadic way of the life. Khongor is one of the largest sand dunes in Mongolia. Its height reaches to 300 meters and extends from the northwest to the southeast over 180 km. The place is famous for its magnificent sand dunes, “Singing Dune”, the highest, Green Oasis and beautiful sunsets. Climb the Singing Dune and enjoy the ultimate amazing view of the Gobi sand dunes and the Green Oasis from the top of the dune. Enjoy the beautiful Gobi orange sun set in the evening. In the next morning enjoy camel riding. Visit the Green Oasis and “Cool Spring” by camel. Enjoy taking pictures and admire the Gobi beauty still at “Khongor” Sand Dunes.
Day 6. Bogd mountain.
After lunch we will drive to the Bogd mountain. (Tents/ B, L, D)
Day 7. Shuranga
After breakfast we will drive to Eight Lakes Natural Reserve. Visit nomadic family. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 8. Eight Lakes Natural Reserve.
Today we start hiking or horseback riding to the Naiman Nuur Natural Reserve. “Khuisiin Naiman Nuur” – Eight Lakes in English. The lake of Naiman Nuur lies at an altitude of 2200 meters above sea level and this area has been protected since 1992. Red deer, wild Argali sheep, Siberian ibex, musk deer, wild boar, duck and other birds have been sighted here. There are nine freshwater lakes, notably Shireet, Bugat, Khaliut, Khaya, Khuis, Shanaa, Duruu, Baga and Shanaga, last one being pretty small. The surrounding mountains have a forest belt some 300-400 meters wide while there are no trees at the tops. The reflections of larch forests and majestic mountains on the lake water are amazing. Day 9. Eight Lakes Natural Reserve.
Today it will be a wonderful day of relaxing in the untouched nature of Naiman Nuur Natural Reserve. Free time for walking, bird watching and relaxing in this exotic natural reserve. (Tents/ B, L, D)
Day 10. Shuranga
Trekking or horseback riding back to the car. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 11. Visit the Ulaan Tsutgalan Waterfall.
In the morning we drive to Ulaan Tsutgalan “Red Waterfall”. The waterfall is on Ulaan River which flows through basalt rocks formed by a unique combination of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes around 20000 years ago. Ulaan Tsutgalan Waterfall cascades from a height of 20 meters and is naturally most impressive after heavy rain but disappears in dry seasons. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 12. Tsenkher Hot Spring.
After breakfast drive to Thenkher Hot Spring in Arkhangai Province. Thenkher Hot Spring water contains a blend of the most useful minerals for the human body. Mongolians say its water is a pleasant treatment for stress, nervous disorders and rheumatism. Enjoy walking to the beginning of the mineral spring and having hot mineral water bath. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 13. Khorgo - Terkh National Park.
Drive to beautiful Khorgo -Terkh National Park. On the way we will pass through the town of Tsetserleg, the center of Arkhangai Province. Continue driving along the amazing canyon of Chuluut River and Khangai Zone. Arrive in the camp, relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 14. Visit the spots in Khorgo Terkh National Park.
Today we will visit the attractions of the park: the Khorgo extinct volcano, the Yellow Dog’s Hell, the Ice Cave and Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. Khorgo – Terkh National Park has been protected since 1965 and covers an area of 773 square km. Khorgo Mountain was an active volcano just 8000 years ago and Khorgo is covered with basalt. Red deer, Siberian deer, wild boar, reddish and black ducks are found in the park. During the summer, great cormorants commonly nest at Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. The lake is beautiful with crystal clear fresh water and supports pike & other fish. Torrents of lava issuing from the Khorgo Volcano dammed the Terkh River in the north and south forming the lake and is at an altitude of 2060 meters above sea level. Enjoy walking and bird watching by the lake shore. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 15. Karakorum “Ancient Capital of the Great Mongolian Empire of the Genghis Khan”- Erdenezuu monastery.
Today we will drive to the Karakorum “Ancient Capital of the Great Mongolian Empire of the Genghis Khan”. Karakorum (Kharkhorin) was the capital of Great Mongolian Empire of Chinggis Khan in the 13-14th Centuries. Visit one of Mongolia’s two largest monasteries, “Erdenezuu”, Museum of Karakorum and surrounding sites of Karakorum: the Great Khan’s monument, the legendary Turtle of Karakorum and the Phallic Rock statue.
Erdenezuu Monastery has a complex of 108 stupas and over 10 temples that contain rich displays of Mongolian Buddhism. The Erdenezuu Monastery and ruins of Karakorum were registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1996. (Ger camp/ B, L, D)
Day 16. Khustai National Park.
Drive to Khustai National Park. This park protects the “Takhi” wild horse, also known as Przewalski’s wild horse. The park also contains a great diversity of other rare wild animals and plants. Visit a small museum of the Takhi wild horse and watch a short documentary film about Khustai NP. Enjoy seeing the Takhi wild horse and other wild life in the late afternoon. (Tents/ B, L, D)
Day 17. Ulaanbaatar city.
Return to Ulaanbaatar. When we arrive in Ulaanbaatar city you can visit shopping at a cashmere factory outlet store if you want. (B, L)
